Suzani embroidery originates from Central Asia. The term ‘suzani’ means ‘needle’ in Persian. It is mainly produced in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. The items on offer here – cushions and mattress toppers – are made in India.
This technique is based on ancestral knowledge, and the oldest surviving Suzani date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, although there is evidence to suggest it existed as early as the 15th century.
In addition to their ornamental qualities, suzanis were traditionally made as part of a dowry and presented to the groom on his wedding day. They represented the union of two families and were decorated with symbols associated with happiness, health and fertility.
